I Can't Help My Child!
I’ve heard this many times, “I can’t help my child. I don’t know much about music; I just want my child to get this”.
I think you can help. You can help your children become accomplished human beings. You must. Who else would care more? Moreover, it will be a great opportunity for YOU to learn something new with your child. Everyone’s experience may be different, but young children almost never make it through on their own without devoted parents.
Please, consider hearing about the experience of Amy Chua from her daughter Sophia and from this interview with Amy.
The “Tiger Mom” story stirred a lot of emotions. Amy herself – and I, too – don’t think that this is the only way, but they say, it works well.
In my opinion, Amy dramatized her story just a bit for the sake of entertaining the readers (and she made a few hints about that at the end of the book). However, the story is authentic and very topical; all of our children are not innately disciplined. We, the parents, have to become their first disciplinarians – and the best true helpers. I don’t know a child who would prefer practicing any instrument over playing video games, or hanging out with friends, or watching a movie, or a TV show. Now think about your child’s life in 20 years in modern world. Imagine who s/he will compete against, and who of those young adults will be more successful? – Obviously, those, whose intelligence and perseverance will have been developed from a very young age, who will have been learned early how to be focused, persistent, industrious, and disciplined. There are a lot of studies on great influence of studying music on human’s brain. Many famous people – scientists, actors, politicians, athletes and even astronauts played musical instruments. Here is a list, which could be expanded.
By the way, do your kids play video games or watch serials? How much time a day, how many days a week? 🙂 If you don’t want to take it away completely, bargain with them; don’t let them have it all for granted.
